When Nika was born in Haiti, she was diagnosed with hydranencephaly and hydrocephalus, which meant she was born without a brain. Her cerebral hemispheres which were absent at birth were replaced with cerebrospinal fluid. The fluid build which caused Nika's head circumference to continue to increase placed in in an urgent need for a medical care, until she was fortunate to encounter Sara, a recreation therapist for a pediatric medical center, who took her to United States for medical intervention.
Because there is a stigma placed on people with disabilities, Nika’s biological mother tried all she could not to be associated with the stigma. She is said to have been a prostitute and had possibly tried to terminate the pregnancy by taking poison, and worse still, had attempted to sell her off to government agencies for her to be used in researches.
Driven with the passion to help children with disabilities, Sarah left USA upon her graduation from school, for Haiti in 2013, to work with the pediatric medical center, where she met malnourished Nika being carried by her 'shamed' biological mother. Nika was rarely taken out in public by her mother, and on the few occasions, she would be covered in blankets so as to be hidden from the world.
With several efforts in counseling Nika's mother into accepting the disability and working with the woman on helping the child live with it, Sarah decided to visit Nika's mother at home and was shocked with her discovery.
Nika who was 11 months old and weighed six pounds at that time, was see lying on a rice sack, completely alone, surrounded by garbage inside the house.
After convincing the little baby's mother, Sarah was able to take Nika to her orphanage family, and started giving her the care she so deserved. Nika is currently living in America where she’s receiving medical care, thanks to Sarah and her husband.
"Nika wasn’t malnourished because of her diagnosis, but because of severe neglect. In August 2014, Sarah’s gut instinct led her to visit Nika’s birth mother and check on Nika. Sarah was horrified to find Nika completely alone inside the house, lying on a rice sack and surrounded by garbage. She was eleven months old and weighed six pounds, several of which was built-up fluid."
“The first week Nika was in my care, it hit me just how neglected and malnourished this sweet little girl was,” Sarah wrote on her website, Little Warrior Nika. Her internal organs were beginning to shut down. 99% of babies with Nika’s diagnosis die before they turn one. Miraculously, she had already surpassed the odds, even in such deplorable conditions.
Even when doctors had told Sarah that Nika was dying, and to pray for a miracle;
But according to Sarah, “Miracle upon miracle, she continued to survive.”
With her husband's support in her mission to provide a loving home for the disabled child, Sarah succeeded in officially becoming the legal guardian for Nika in February 2015, and vowed to carry out the responsibility for life.
Now, the couple with the large heart has given little Nika a loving and caring family with a thousand reason to live on!
